The Great Gatsby: Chapter 2
After reading the second chapter of the novel, the reader gains more insight about the characters and the world beyond West and East Egg, Long Island. Based on your of these two chapters, how do you like the book so far? What interests you? What character so far do you relate to? Which do you find most intriguing? Why?
I actually find this book very interesting. What interests me the most is the fact that tom is so blunt about his affair. However, myrtle seems to be his soulmate. She seems to love tom more and show him way more attention than daisy. Daisy seems to be more interested in the money and the allusion of making every thing seem ok . So far I feel like I don't relate to any character, we'll at least for right now. They are going through way more I wanna say "grown up" problems that I can can actually relate to.
ReplyDeleteAfter actually reading the book with a more clear unstanding I do agree with Brietnni. I dont understand how a woman can stay in a relationship knowing her lover is cheating and not have a care about it. To stay in a relationship because of the money just shows that you can not live a normal life without a men. The part that interest me the most is how daisy actually still remains in a relationship with Tom. The book is only interesting on the parts the paint a clear picture of the couples situation.
DeleteI am actually enjoying the book much more than I thought I would. I am interested in finding out more about Mr. Gatsby, Nick, and background information about Tom and Daisy. I find Tom a bit more intriguing than Daisy because I don't understand why he would rather have an affair than simply leave Daisy alone if he behaves as though he doesn't really need her. If he wants to lead a promiscuous life he might as well not be married and just date various women. As for Daisy, I can understand her logic when it comes to allowing herself to succumb to the lifestyle that Tom has partially forced her to live. However, I wish she would find some self-confidence and realize that there is more to life than beauty and fortune.
ReplyDeleteI really like the book, it is very well written and sort of dreamy like. One very interesting thing I saw is how money is really ruining some people lives. For one, you have Daisy who is unhappily staying with her husband because of his money, then you have the lowly Mr. Wilson who's wife is going out with high and mighty Tom. The unhappiness goes both ways when it comes to money. So far I relate to Nick actually, because he is just observing how terrible everyone is.
ReplyDeleteThis chapter is far more interesting than the first one. i agree with you dale money is one motive why daisy is married to Tom. daisy also have very low self esteem. it is obvious that she is not in love with Tom. Being married to a man who is apparently unfaithful to her suggests an absurd belief that she doesn't deserve better than that .she is not really happy and knows tom is cheating on her but still stay with him.daisy's little self esteem and attraction to money are two reason she cannot leave Tom. i also think that tom really uses myrtle as a side chick whenever he wants to avoid being close to daisy. tom's treatment of myrtle implies that he doesn't love her.
DeleteI found this book actually interesting so far. To find out that Tom told Nick his wife cousin to meet his mistress. It showed that Tom do not care about his wife and child . Also to realize Tom do not care about no one about himself because he cheating with his friend wife. I liked how in the chapter we found out some information about Jay Gatsby. In addition, this book reach a climax when myrtle talked about Tom wife and he solved the problem by breaking her nose. This chapter kept me intreated and i wanted to keep reading. Loved the new characters that was introduce in this chapter.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Qasson.Tom is a player and does not care about others feelings. I really don't why Tom wanted Nick to meet Myrtle. It just shows how irresponsible he is but I think he found the right partner in Myrtle. She appreciates him more than Daisy and cause less problem. It is still unclear to why he lied about his marriage with Daisy since they both wanna leave each other.I felt that this chapter was more clear than the previous one. I found the first chapter to be very confusing and unfinished. Although I am not interested in this novel I found the end of chapter 2 very intriguing. I am interested in hearing what the class has to say.
DeleteBefore reading this book, I actually believed that I wouldn't like it, but I'm starting to find this book interesting! A part of this book that stuck out to me the most would have to be how blunt Tom is about his affair. I think this part stuck out to because that could be relatd to events that happens in today's world. I don't think it is weird that Daisy remains in a relationship with Tom because she is just there for the money. But, I beleieve that if Tom isn't in love with Daisy and he is in love Myrtle he should leave Daisy and be with the person that he is in love with and who is in love with him. I enjoyed the new characters that were introduced in this chapter.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this chapter more than the first. That is because I felt like more things happened and it was a lot more drama. Tom's mistress Myrtle Wilson is married as well. I didn't know that. I just thought that she was some woman who knew that she was cheating with a married man. The part that seemed interesting was page 37 of chapter two. The part where Tom broke Myrtle's nose with his open hand. I feel as though even if Tom seems like he doesn't care about Daisy, deep down he still does. If he didn't, he wouldn't have hit Myrtle. I don't think he should've done that and I don't think that Myrtle should've pushed her boundaries.
ReplyDeleteIt is very intresting how he invited Nick to meet Myrtle. I find it very disrepectcful thst he has time for her; but doesnt have a relationship with his daughter. Is Tom really happy with the decision that he made? Is Nick comfortable with Myrtle telling him the story of how they first met? If Myrtle knows about Daisy why does she countinue to be in realtionship with Tom? Should Tom really abuse Myrtle ? As I countinue to read the book I realize how Tom interact with other people. I am able to focus more on Tom as an individual. and at this point I really dont like him. There a problem or issue that Tom has in his life that make his react like this.
ReplyDeleteI'm not as interested in the book as everyone else appears to be I find as though I can't relate any character , but I find it interesting how tom continues to have and affair and be so blatant and I can't bare it and distasteful how he brings nick to meet her and that confuses me. I can't seem to understand how daisy can stay with someone that treats her that way ( cheating) and for Tom to hit mrs.wilson and mr.Mckee and nick to not say anything is odd
ReplyDeleteAs I read the first two chapters of the book "The Great Gatsby" I start to find the book very confusing but entertaining. In chapter 2 what interests me the most was how open about his affair with Nick who is his wife cousin. Also it was interesting how Tom got so violent with Myrtle because she was saying his wife name. For somebody who doesn't care and is unhappily married it was sort of confusing and brought many thoughts. Tom also lies to Catherine about Daisy being a catholic and that being the reason why he hasn't divorce her . It seems to me that Tom somehow still feels a connection with Daisy , maybe because of his daughter but who knows. So far I don't feel I relate to any of the characters in the book , possibly when I get to learn more about them as I read along I will. I find Tom to be the most intriguing because he captures the reader with his unusual actions . He leaves us very curious on why he is doing certain things . In my opinion , I believe he should stop playing with both Myrtle and Daisy. He should divorce Daisy and be with Myrtle who appreciates him and apparently loves him.

ReplyDeleteI found the first two chapter of the Great Gatsby to be very interseting. Chapter 2, i liked more because its shows a lot about respect in a relationship, how people desire can rountine and also character. The most intriguing part of the chapter was the party, where Tom is now being characterize as dishonest and display a lack of control: he is feeling no guilt for betraying Daisy with Myrtle, but he feels compelled to keep Myrtle in her place. Tom emerges in this section as a unclivized bully who uses his social status and physical strength to dominate those around him. I cant seem to relate to any of these characters yet because still its forming a sense of confusion on the ideal of American Dream. That being said, many books are worth reading whether you like them or not because they help us better understand humanity, society, and even ourselves. I definitely think The Great Gatsby falls into this category of book.
