Welcome E5 Honors to our unit on The American Dream. Over the next few weeks we will explore the origins, meaning and transformations of the American Dream as it is expressed in literature. We will begin this unit with a reading of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. You will work with your small groups to research some aspect of the time period when this novel takes place. Looking forward to your presentations that will begin in class Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. Feel free to email me questions or concerns....Ms. A
When the character Daisy said her wished for her daughter to be a fool , I somewhat agreed to what she was saying , she meant that she didn't want her daughter she feel pain she was because even through she lived the luxury life she was unhappy her husband was cheating on her with a women that lived in the slums , she felt alone. Daisy is to me is stuck in a unhappy place , she has money , but that's not enough for her she wants everlasting love , in which she can't receive from her husband.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading chapter 1 I had a lot of thoughts. First off I was surprised that the narrator narrator nick lived on west egg where the "new rich" people live and he was not rich he just graduated from Yale. The next character that I had questions on is Daisy why was so calm that her husband Tom was having an affair that she know about. Also, why she would say that she hope her daughter come out to be a fool because beautiful fools make it in the world. In addition, I did not like how Tom was so arrogant at the table telling people they should read a book that he found interesting. Also how he wanted Nick to have a relationship with Jordan.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the most interesting character was Daisy; her personality makes her stand out from the rest of the characters we know thus far. It seems like daisy is living the "perfect" life, with a beautiful daughter, and a happy marriage. However as the story unfolds I learn that her life wasn't as perfect as I thought. She was happy on the outside but wasn't as happy on the inside.y This shows that there are two sides to Daisy’s life. This is very fascinating and I can't wait to read more.
ReplyDeleteThe first chapter of The Great Gatsby was not very intriguing. I am still unclear about the difference between East and West Egg but I am interested to learn more. It seems as though the main character is a bit pretentious, however I feel his personality will eventually change. I was impressed with his intelligence and observant behavior. I am looking forward to finding out the purpose of this story.
ReplyDeleteWhat I believe was the most interesting part about chapter 1 is the fact that Daisy so nonchalantly accepted the fact that her husband cheated on her. I think the reason for this relates to our class discussion on Thursday. If you look at her life she has money and is living a comfortable life, despite the fact that the fidelity of her marriage is in question. She stays silent and goes along with it because she wants to keep the money that she is enjoying; which means that money can buy part of her happiness.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading chapter one of The Great Gatsby I was not very interested in chapter one but there was a part that stuck out to me. The part of this chapter that stuck out to me was when Nick Carraway stated that he learned from his father to reserve judgement about other people, because if he hold them up to his own moral standards he will misunderstand them. It believe that that is good that his father taught him that while growing up because it's not good to judge a book by its cover because they way you see people is not the way they really whether it's good or bad.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Nick so fascinated by Mr. Gatsby? Mr. Gatsby seems to be very handsome and an outgoing person that is able to change people's life. Throughout the book, he was interested in the way Mr. Gatsby look and interact with others.
ReplyDeleteWhy would Tom cheat with his wife Daisy with a next girl in New York? Is it consider the moral thing to do as a husband with a child and a wife ? My reactions to chapter one is I feel sad for Daisy because she feel like the perfect family, but in reality she was cheated on, and she had no idea about it.
The novel the Great Gatsby focus around this idea of the American dream. It is narrated by Nick Carraway, who characterizes himself as both highly moral and highly tolerant. Carraway lives in West egg- which is what we may know as the home of the new rich. He briefly mentions the hero of his story, Gatsby, saying that Gatsby represented everything he scorns, but that he exempts Gatsby completely from his usual judgments. Gatsby’s personality was nothing short of “gorgeous" to him. The first chapter, is wonderful in the sense that it appreciates the characters, and gives the audience an idea of who to expect in this story to come. As the story continues nick then went on to describing other characters. These characters include Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Tom, a powerful figure was dressed in riding clothes.Something i found interesting about each character is that they all symbolize these successful and wealthy people we all hope to be someday. Another thing i found interesting was the way the narrator pokes at the point of him having opportunities that others are not available too. Carraway explains this when he said that his father told him that "whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," ----- "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had". Also while reading, I actually visualized the East, and West Egg as an "Outlier". A community that's out of the normal expectant, Which is a living area of those who are either "new rich", meaning there are first generation rich. Also "old rich" which includes people who are from generation after generation of wealth.
ReplyDeleteThe narrator of The Great Gatsby is a young man from Minnesota named Nick Carraway. I found Nick weird based on how he seems fascinated by Mr. Gatsby. However i found this chapter interesting based on how characters are introduce such as Tom and Daisy. In chapter 1 Tom was reading a book called "The Rise Of The Color Empire" which spoke about the realization of racism and how it is bad. Tom stated he found it interesting that it was convincing while Daisy made fun of him for his consumption . I still had to realize that the this was taken place in the 1920's. Thus far the most interesting character is Tom based off his characteristics of a powerful figure was dressed in riding clothes. Each character has there own personality but each symbolizes success and wealth in there own way. In this I notice that the narrator speaks about himself and having better opportunities than others. This was shown in the beginning of chapter 1. The society of East and West egg involves a community that is normal but both contrast based off of those who are "new money" and "old money." So far i am interested in this book and interested in reading the rest of the book
ReplyDeleteFrom reading chapter one it starts off with Nick and how he got advice from his advice. I believe it was important when the narrator talks about the advantages of having a father. From reading chapter one family is an important factor. Nick talks about him living in the Middle West. It inspires me that family should be very connected and close family. It caught my attention that he is a Yale graduate. However he should have talked about his childhood and family. Nick was been asked by man how to get to West Egg village now he wasn’t lonely and he felt like a guide within his own neighborhood. I was surprised that this could make someone happy just something so little. I found the Gatsby’s mansion was a beautiful place the East Egg was more advanced than the West Egg when Nick went over to his cousin Tom and Daisy houses. Daisy however has a very good personality due to her enthusiasm, which made her stands out. Also she supposedly had a perfect life and had a beautiful daughter. She really was being cheating on which showed unhappiness on the inside which evolves into seeing that there are two sides of Daisy’s life and now I am more interested into her as a character and now I want to learn more about her.
ReplyDeleteThe East Egg is home to "old money" , people whose families have had great wealth for generations while the West Egg is home to "new money" , people whose wealth was recently earned. Nick moved to West egg seeking fortune as a bond salesman being classified as the working class , I believe in time as a young educated man from Yale and the postion he places his home amongst the wealthy (Gatsby) , he will be bound for new money as the time comes. Nick seems ambitious, a strong independent, and a person who can easily withstand social pressure as his hometown (East Egg) gossips about his engagement he refuses to be in. Nick's interactions with his friends and family places himself in a category al by himself in both appearance and personiality as the author writes in chapter 1. Daisy has the ability to draw people in while speaking and Tom appearance wise seems very different from the rest of the people in the setting. In Nick's interaction in chapter 1 , the people involved all seem unique.
ReplyDeleteThe narrator name is Nick Carraway. I think nick view of the world will remain one sided because he is and will always be more fortunate than others but why does he find gastby so intriguing .i also find it usable how daisy can bare to be cheated on and react with rigorous action.
ReplyDeleteIn the first chapter of the book " The Great Gatsby" I meet many characters and learn about there personalities . One that stood out the most to me was Daisy. Daisy is the narrators(nick) second cousin. She lives in East Egg with her husband Tom Buchanans and their daughter . Tom and Daisy seem to be having a dysfunctional relationship . Daisy is unhappy while Tom is having an affair . Although this might trouble many women , Daisy seems to not really care about her husband cheating on her . It seems to me that there was no love in the first place . Daisy was probably into Tom for his money. Daisy seems like a gold digger , she is loving living the life of luxury although she is unhappy with her partner. In chapter one we also learn a little bit about Gatsby . Gatsby is Nick's neighbor in West Egg Village . Gatsby lives in a giant mansion and seems to me that nick is fascinated by Gatsby. Nick whom is the narrator moved to New York for bonds after graduating from Yale. The story is told from his point of view and he seems like a very smart guy . Throughout the first chapter you mostly hear mention West Egg and East Egg which are two villages seem to be distinguished by how wealthy you are . Overall , the first chapter was very interesting , and it sort of leaves us reader with a sense of wanting to know more .
